Quaker Wall Clock – c.1740

Hoop and spike, iron posted frame, wall clock; thirty hour, Quaker made (circa 1740). 11 inch square brass dial, typical simple Quaker decoration to dial centre. Unusually, a two handed clock, with minute markings to outside of chapter ring. Count wheel strike, striking the hours on its large, resonant, cast bell. Although an anonymous clock (the early Quakers considered it a vanity to put their names to a clock) this one appears to have been made in the North Oxfordshire area, possibly by a member of the Gilkes family.

A novelty fox-hunting timepiece, polypatinated brass with blue enamelled nails, the enamelled dial inscribed with the retailers name, H. Greaves, New Street, Birmingham. French movement within an English case. Circa 1880.
Henry Greaves were silversmiths at New Street Birmingham around the turn of the 19th century stocking their own wares and bought in fancy goods.
